Abstract:  In 1994, James Arthur published a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action of a Hecke operator on L2 cohomology. His formula is expressed in group-theoretic terms: centralizers of elliptic elements, discrete series characters, etc. This talk will provide some background on Hecke operators and L2 cohomology, and then describe a purely topological approach to this problem which eventually yields geometrical intepretations for each of the terms in Arthur's formula.  This is joint work with R. MacPherson
