PhD received from Columbia University

I hail from Bucharest, Romania.  I did my undergraduate studies in Mathematics at the University of Bucharest; here is a picture from those days. For my graduate studies, I went to Columbia University, in New York City; here is a picture from that time (taken in Cambridge, UK). After a J.W. Gibbs Instructorship at Yale University, in New Haven, I came to Northeastern University, in Boston, where I've been ever since.

My research interests are in Topology, and how it relates to Algebra, Geometry, and Combinatorics. I mainly study the topology and combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. I also study various problems concerning the topology and geometry of knots, links, and manifolds, and the homology and lower central series of discrete groups. Below are some recent papers and preprints (click here for a complete list).

In April 2006, Graham Denham and I organized a Workshop and Special Session on Arrangements and Configuration Spaces. In June, I was at a BIRS meeting in Banff, Alberta; here is a photo from a hike around Lake Louise. In August, I was at MSRI, for a workshop on Arrangements and Configuration Spaces. Shortly after, I was back at MSRI for six weeks, at the Computational Applications of Algebraic Topology program; here is a photo from atop the Berkeley hills. Later in the Fall, I spent a month at ICTP, in Trieste, Italy; here is a photo from a hike on the hills above the Adriatic. In December, I spent two weeks on a RiP visit at MFO, in Oberwolfach, Germany.

In May 2007, I was at the Palazzone di Cortona in Italy for a Conference on Braids and their Ramifications. In August, Michael Farber, Sergey Yuzvinsky and I organized a mini-workshop on Topology of closed 1-forms and cohomology jumping loci at MFO. In September, I visited the University of Nice; here is a photo from a hike on the hills above the Med. And in October, I was at IMAR, in Bucharest.
