Abstract: A composition of birational maps given by Laurent polynomials need not be given by Laurent polynomials; however, sometimes, quite unexpectedly, it does. In a joint work with A.Zelevinsky, motivated by the theory of cluster algebras, we suggest a unified treatment of this phenomenon.

Applications include the proof of the Gale-Robinson conjecture on integrality of generalized Somos sequences; the Markov equation; the cube recurrence of J.Propp; and many others.
