Abstract: This is a preliminary report on some work being done in collaboration with  T. Harima, J.C. Migliore and J.S. Shin in an attempt to get a handle on the  question:  what can be the Hilbert function of a level algebra?

Level algebras are an important class of algebras which have appeared in  several places both in  algebra and geometry and a better understanding of  their structure would be interesting.  The most important recent work on  their structure has been done by Stanley, Boij, Iarrobino (and collaborators) and Froberg-Laksov.

In my talk I will give some background information about where level algebras appear, what was known about them and what new things we have found recently.  I will also discuss some open problems that the four of us are still considering.
