Abstract: Let I be a homogeneous ideal of a graded ring R = k[x_1,...x_n]. The multiplicity e of R/I can be expressed in terms of the shifts in the minimal free resolution (over R) of R/I; in general this formula involves all the shifts in the resolution. We will discuss some conjectures for bounds on e in terms of the minimal and maximal shifts.
