Abstract:   A classical theorem of O. Zariski and R. Walker states that a surface singularity can be solved after a finite number of normalized blowing-ups. We shall show that after a normalized blowing-up, if multiplicity is at least 2, either the multiplicity or the multiplicity of the generic polar curve is strictly decreasing.
