Abstract: It is classical that one can attach invariants to 3-manifolds by considering certain SU(2) bundles over them (the Casson invariants). Ben Martin had the idea that one should try to extend this to new invariants, using complex reductive groups in place of SU(2) and geometric invariant theory. At the moment, this theory is very conjectural. I will discuss the baby case. I will explain how Ben Martin treated it, and then discuss how I generalised the result and simplified the proof.
