Abstract:    Let X be the generic Riemann surface of genus g. If g > 6, Zariski proved that there is no solvable map from X to the Riemann sphere (i.e. a map with solvable monodromy group). We will discuss several generalizations and extensions of this result and some related open questions. In particular, there is a much more severe restriction on the possible monodromy groups than suggested by Zariski. Some of this is joint work with John Shareshian.
