The Summer Institute in Mathematical Studies at Northeastern University is pleased to invite applications for its program of study and directed research in Summer 2003. The area chosen for this summer is:
| The program is designed to provide an introduction to pair-wise and multiple sequence alignment, phylogenetic tree construction, biological pathway study, the use of databases, micro-array analysis, and protein structure prediction. The computer implementation of these topics will also be covered. |
|
Participants in the program may be graduate or advanced undergraduate students. They need not be math majors, but should have a good understanding of undergraduate mathematics (linear algebra, probability and statistics) and some computer skills (including scripting). However no formal training in biology or programming is required. The program will be hosted by the Mathematics Department at Northeastern University, in Boston Massachusetts. A certain number of fellowships are available and will be awarded on a competitive basis; these will provide $2,200 in living expenses. |
