Course Description for MTH 1106 Functions and Algebra
Prerequisites: MTH 1010 or equivalent (a thorough
knowledge of algebra, including common fractions, radicals,
powers, and symbolic manipulation of algebraic expressions,
especially multiplication and factoring).
Student Population: Afro-American Studies, Biology,
Geology, as well as
several different majors in the
colleges of Liberal Arts, Boston-Bouv\'e, and
Pharmacy and Allied Health. It should especially be
taken by students who need to prepare for MTH 1107.
Goals: This course solidifies precalculus mathematics
and can serve as a preparatory step for calculus courses
such as MTH 1107.
Topics:
- Algebraic equations, with emphasis on linear
and quadratic equations, inequalities,
and systems of equations
- Word problems on motion, mixture, interest,
leading to algebraic equations
- Functions and their graphs, lines and their
slopes, parabolas; optimization problems
- Trigonometric functions, solution of right
triangles; elements of vector algebra
