Course Description for MTH 1107 Functions and Basic Calculus
Prerequisites: MTH 1106 or equivalent (functions and their
graphs, trigonometric functions, lines and their slopes,
etc.)
Student Population: Several different majors in the
colleges of Liberal Arts, Boston-Bouv\'e, and
Pharmacy and Allied Health.
Goals: This course introduces the basic
ideas of differential calculus. Based on that,
it also introduces and applies exponential
and logarithmic functions.
Topics:
- Slopes of functions and the derivative,
symbolic manipulation with derivatives including the
Chain Rule
- Curve sketching; optimization problems via
derivatives; anitderivatives and their
application to motion problems
- Exponential and logarithmic functions and their
derivatives; application to growth and decay problems
