Making Donations

There are several opportunities for alumni and friends to donate to important initiatives within the Department of Mathematics.

Outreach: Partner with Department to excite and prepare the future generation of mathematicians. Many of our outreach programs to K-12 students require funds to support instructors, mentors, tutors, and various activities. Even small contributions can make a big difference for the students in these important educational programs.

Graduate Student Support: Outstanding graduate students are essential to a vibrant program. Providing fellowships provides a critical edge to our ability to attract the best students. Most graduate students require financial support in order to pursue their studies. Currently, we have a limited number of Teaching Assistantships and a very limited number of Research Assistantships (associated with faculty grants). Many graduate students have no financial support, and even those students receiving financial support during the academic year may require additional support during the summer. Contributions to financial support for graduate students can make a big difference in the lives of the students and to the success of our graduate program.

Gilmore Research Postdoctoral Fund: Most departments of mathematics have postdoctoral research positions, which play an important role in their scholarly mission. To remain competitive, we have launched this endowed fund, named for Emeritus Professor Maurice (Pete) Gilmore, that would allow us to create postdoctoral research positions. These positions would involve a small amount of teaching, and allow the postdoc to interact with our research faculty for 2 or 3 years before moving on to a tenure-track position at Northeastern or another university. Because the program would operate from the interest of the fund, we need to generate a substantial principal at the outset, so all contributions will be very welcome.

Endowed Professorships: Professorships are one of the highest honors accorded a faculty member. Endowed professorships benefit the Department enormously by providing an incentive for recruitment and retention of exceptional faculty and by freeing up funds that can be used for other urgent needs.
