Abstract:  The representation theory of p-adic groups has been studied since the 1960s, especially for purposes of application to automorphic forms. The theory has beem slower to develop than the parallel theory for semisimple Lie groups, but over the past several years, an elegant and unified (and still partly conjectural) picture, based on slight generalizations of affine Hecke algebras, has emerged. This talk will review for a general audience recent progress on this approach to p-adic representation theory.
