Abstract:   In the late 1980s, Gromov introduced several generalizations of hyperbolic geometry and showed that these could be used to study a class of groups known as "hyperbolic groups." This class of groups is very restrictive however and in his thesis, Farb developed a more general notion of "relatively hyperbolic groups." In joint work with John Crisp, we give a new geometric criterion for relative hyperbolicity and apply it to investigate relative hyperbolicity properties of Artin groups.
