Alumni Conference

February 28, 2009

On Saturday, February 28, 2009, we will hold our fourth annual Graduate Alumni Conference for former graduate students in our Department. One purpose of this conference is to learn from you what you have been doing, and how you have applied the knowledge and experience that you gained while you were in our graduate program; we also may learn ways that we could improve the graduate program for our current students. The Alumni Conference is also an opportunity for Ph.D. alumni to connect with each other, with our current graduate students, faculty, and with the department. We hope these connections will be helpful to you both personally and professionally.

There is no charge for Departmental faculty, graduate students, or graduate alumni to register for the conference, and in fact we will provide lunch for all those who do register. The tentative schedule for this year's conference follows; all events will be held in the Department's Conference Room, 509 Lake Hall.

9:00 am   Tea & Coffee Served
9:15 am   Welcome by Graduate Coordinator Jerzy Weyman
9:30 am   Talk by Stephen Lovett (Wheaton College):  A Different Branch? Mathematics at a Liberal Arts College: Abstract: As I neared the end of my Ph.D. program at Northeastern University 6 years ago, I had a variety of options for employment. Though I was offered a job with the DoD, I chose teaching at a liberal arts college, despite some encouragement to the contrary. After sharing about choice I will discuss my experience teaching in the context of a liberal arts college and the nature of mathematical work at such institutions. I will also talk about my current large scale project ? writing an undergraduate level textbook in differential geometry ? and mention a few results as well as lessons learned.
10:30 am   Talk by David Finn (Rose-Hulmann Institute of Technology):   Doing Research with Undergraduates: One of the differences between teaching at a primarily undergraduate college and a graduate college is the opportunity to do research and work with students on research. At primary undergraduate institution, the only opportunity is to involve undergraduate students in your research. For the past several years, I have been in involved in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Mathematics at Rose-Hulman. In this talk, I will describe directing undergraduate research, some of the problems that I have had undergraduates work on, and some of the results obtained by undergraduates on our investigation into the shape of a cookie. The results are then primarily on the behavior of solutions to capillary equation,, over a domain in the plane with u=0 on
11:30 am   Talk by Anna Chetoukhina:  Working in Industry:"Quantitative Investment Management" In this talk, I will discuss general applications of quantitative methods in investment management, as well as share my own experience working as a quantitative analyst for the past several years. In light of the global economic crisis, I would also like to touch upon some recent events that shook quantitative financial world, reflecting on lessons learned and thinking about challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
12:15 pm   Lunch
1:30 pm   Panel Discussion: Moderator, Professor Jerzy Weyman
2:30 pm   Selected presentations of Faculty research by:

2:30 David Massey Title: The Local Topology of Complex Analytic Spaces

Abstract: I will begin with a quick description of the Milnor fibration of a complex hypersurface. This will lead into brief discussions/descriptions of perverse sheaves and characteristic cycles.

3:00 Maxim Braverman

3:30 Marc Levine. Question and answer period

4:00 pm   End
