Research Seminar in Mathematics (MTH G450 - 30757)

Organized by Professor Jonathan Weitsman

Guest Speaker: Lauren Williams
Harvard University

Title: What does the non-negative part of a flag variety look like?
Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Time: 3:30 p.m.
Location: 509 Lake Hall

  • Department tea (3:30-4:00)

  • Research Talk (4:00 - 5:00)

Abstract: In the 1990's, Lusztig generalized the classical theory of total positivity, and in particular, defined the non-negative part of any flag variety. It has been believed for some time that the topology of these spaces should be very simple: that they should be homeomorphic to closed balls. In this talk I will explain how to use tools such as poset topology and discrete Morse theory to get a better understanding of what these spaces look like. Part of this is joint work with K. Rietsch.

  • Discussion at 5:00 p.m. followed by dinner with the speaker.
