Research Seminar in Mathematics (MATH8450 - 15715)
Organized by Professor Jonathan Weitsman
Guest Speaker: Benson Farb
University of Chicago
Title: Surface bundles and mapping class groups
Date: Tuesday, September 14, 2010
Time: 12:00 p.m.
Location: 509 Lake Hall
Lunch (12:00-1:00)
Introductory Talk (1:00 - 2:00)
Abstract: In this talk I will give an introduction to the theory of surface bundles and their classification. Mapping class groups of surfaces play a key role here. I will also explain some fundamental connections with and applications to many areas of mathematics, from 3-manifold theory to algebraic geometry to combinatorial group theory. I will try to make this talk accessible to first year graduate students.
Tea (2:00 - 2:30)
First Talk (2:30 - 3:30)
