Initiatives
| 1. Proactive recruitment through STEM Advanced Placement (AP) outreach programs, orientation sessions with accepted students, and continuous recruiting of first- and second- year undeclared majors through informational meetings and workshop invitations. |

2. Fall Preview: Exploring Mathematics: As a step in building a community among PRISM students and the study of mathematics in general, we will run an intensive one-week program to be held for incoming freshmen before classes start in September. The program is intended to appeal to students who have an interest in mathematics, but the program will not rely upon their having completed any prerequisites. It will be an intensive one-week experience whose academic component will be mathematical discovery.

3. Interdisciplinary Research Seminars (IDRS) for first- and second-year students during the Fall and Spring semesters. These seminars build community among students, provide a forum where students will learn about the nature and progress of research conducted by STEM faculty, explore career options, and engage in work on open-ended problems and inquiry at the earliest stages of their undergraduate experience. Speakers will include faculty, upper-division students, graduate students, and faculty in all STEM majors and employers who hire Mathematics, Physics, and Biology students. These seminars will be open to everyone.

4. Summer Discovery Experience (SDE) is an intensive four-week interdisciplinary program engaging students in problem solving and open-ended inquiry, through which students are introduced to the excitement of the research process. The onsite program will be designed for 25 students. Through the 2-day Workshop, those not participating in the SDE on site will have internet access to the SDE materials, problems, and projects as they unfold during the SDE. Teams may apply to join an Internet secure blog for working on problems and projects with guidance from PRISM undergraduate and graduate Fellows Selected and trained in building community and facilitating the learning of others.

| 5. Six-Month Research Co-op/Internship with faculty or in positions offsite with organizations such as the US-USDA Center on Aging, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Microsoft, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, or the Center for Biomedical Informatics at the Harvard Medical Center being among the possibilities. |
