Annual Events

The Department of Mathematics sponsors a couple of annual conferences. One of these is the Maurice Auslander Distinguished Lectures and International Conference, which were begun in 2002 with funding by Bernice Auslander: the featured speakers have included Fields medalists and other distinguished research mathematicians. Another is the Graduate Alumni Conference that was begun in 2005: each year we invite some of our Ph.D. alumni, who have gone on to accomplished careers in academia and industry, to return and discuss their experiences.

The Department also organizes the annual Tapas Seminar, which runs every Summer 1 minimester (i.e. May and June). This seminar aims to introduce first and second-year grad students to the various research areas that members of the faculty and more advanced grad students are working in, so as to help beginning students find an area and/or an advisor with whom they might like to work.  Talks by both faculty and grad students are welcome.
