Course Description
The course discusses the following basic topics: mathematical induction;
basics of counting; permutations and combinations; Pascal's triangle; Stirling
numbers of the first and second kind; introduction to the calculus of differences;
Fibonacci-type recurrent relations; generating functions; inclusion-exclusion
principle; rook polynomials and their applications; matching problems.
The grading will be determined as follows: homework 40%, midterm
20%, final exam 40%.
Homework:
Homework 1: due Friday, January 19.
Homework 2: due Friday, January 26.
Homework 3: due Friday, February 2.
Homework 4: due Friday, February 9.
Midterm: Friday, February 16.
Homework 5: due Tuesday, February 27.
Homework 6: due Wednesday, March 14.
Office hours during the finals week:
Monday, March 12, 11:00 - 1:30pm
Wednesday, March 14, 11:00 - 2pm
Friday, March 16, 10:00 - 1pm.
Final Exam: Friday, March 16, 1:00pm - 3:00pm, in
