Course Description

MTH G343 is designed as a basic introductory course in statistical methods for graduate students in various applied sciences. The emphasis is on providing the students with an understanding and appreciation of basic statistical concepts and a basic toolbox of classical statistical methods.

The course has several overall goals.

First, students should learn some basic concepts of statistics. They should develop an understanding of the field of statistics, which enables them to choose and pursue further coursework in applied statistics as appropriate for their need.

Second, students should be prepared to handle simple statistical data analyses on their own. They should learn how to formulate the problem, how to choose appropriate statistical methods, how to carry out the analysis using computers, and how to interpret the computer-generated results.

Third, students should learn to become informed and critical readers of quantitative arguments.

Finally, when students are facing statistical problems beyond their own means, they should be able to communicate effectively with statistical consultants.


The covered topics include:

  1. descriptive statistics;
  2. probability and probability models;
  3. inference for population means in one- and two-sample settings;
  4. one-way analysis of variance;
  5. nonparametric methods;
  6. inference on proportions and contingency tables;
  7. correlation and regression;
  8. survival analysis;
  9. selection of statistical methods


 

The students will be introduced to the computer package SAS. At the end of the course, students should be able to carry out most of the statistical analysis using SAS.
