Description

MATH 1252 is the second semester of the two semester Calculus and Differential Equations Sequence for Biology and Life Science Majors. he course will cover chapters 6 to 12 of the text roughly (and I do mean roughly) as a (re)introduction to Integral Calculus, in order to get quickly back to differential equations commonly used by biologists, which form the goal of the course. The usual drill: this is a totally innovative Mathematics for Biologists course, which explains the use of quotes around the word text, there just is no book yet doing what we want to do at the level we need. The book is mainly there as et al a security blanket.

Grading

The grade will be based on a 2-hour final exam (40%), and in class (weekly) quizzes (60%). Missed quizzes will be averaged as 0. The lowest quiz will be dropped. Partial credit is NOT given generously - you must master the material!

Free Tutoring

The Mathematics Department Tutoring Center is in Room 540B, Nightingale Hall. There will be drop-in hours the week of Sept 13 - I will send you the times as soon as it is annouced. Starting Sept 20 the tutoring hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 10AM-9PM, Thursdays 10AM-6PM, and Fridays 10AM-1PM. Tutoring should begin there two weeks after the start of classes. The tentative schedule is 10am-8pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays; 10am-6pm on Thursdays; and 10am-2pm on Fridays. This is walk-in tutoring; no appointment is necessary. Information about other tutoring and academic assistance programs may be found at http://www.academicguide.neu.edu

Calculator

You will need a calculator that has the Trignometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent), the Exponential Function and the Logarithm functions. You do not have to have a graphing calculator - but it is recommended. Here are some notes on using the TI-calculators for calculus. Here is TI-82. Here is TI-83 and TI-84. Here is TI-85 . Here is TI-86. Note, you are still expected to show all your work on exams.
