Grants and Funding oriented activity during my stay with NU

Internal

· Research and Scholarship Development Grant, Northeastern University, 1997-1998, with K. Dadkhah (Economics), my part (5K) of money was used for organizing the Workshop “Tracking Multiple Objects”

·  Grant of the Center for Subsurface Systems Sensing and Imaging at Northeastern University  Use of

Computer-Enhanced laser and Video Microscopy Techniques to Elucidate the Physical Properties of Individual Cell Surface receptors, Channels, and Adhesion Molecules”, with a team of Harvard medical school and Northeastern University in 1998-1999 funded from NU President’s seed money. My part (5K) of the money was spent to pay the visitor Dr. A. Nikiforov.

·  The continuation of this project is awarded by Engineering Research Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging System", R2c Thrust “Image understanding” ERC CenSSIS as part of the award by NSF. Interdisciplinary outreach

I made a substantial progress in constructing bridges between Departments and Colleges at NU and elsewhere both in education and research:

Among successful projects are:

· Organization of the Summer Institute in Math Sciences -2003 in NEU, Bioinformatics

· Participation in ERC CENSSIS planning and implementation,

· Construction of curricula for Dual Majors in Biology-Math, Finance-Math and Actuarial Science-Math with CBA,

· Construction of a Master in Bioinformatics educational program in a joint NU-BU team,

· Joint work with Harvard medical school, SUNY at Stony Brook, ECE faculty, researchers from IRISA, France, and industry on Multiple and Single Target Tracking ,

· Several joint projects with Engineering NU, Physical Therapy, NU, Biology NU, Pharmaceutical Sciences NU and NOAA, Dept of Commerce, are in progress promising to become successful. Particularly, Prof. E. Melachrinoudis and I prepared a curriculum for joint MS in Engineering (Operations research)/BS in Math 5-year educational program which is still under review by Dean A. Soyster .

·H. Sadaka defended his thesis "Non-parametric search for significant variables of a linear model" in 1997. His dissertation is devoted to studying two non-parametric decisions of search

for significant variables of a linear model applicable without any information about the noise distribution and parameters of the model. The contents of the dissertation is published in three

papers. It was presented also at three international conferences

 H. Sadaka is presently a lecturer at the University of Alexandria, Egypt,

·S. Zhai defended her thesis "Combinatorial and Information-theoretical Aspects of Search Models"in June 2000. She proves equivalence of certain sequential strategies in search theory and coding messages for multi-access channels, constructs some new effective strategies for particular cases and proves some general theorems on capacity regions for multi-access channels. The contents of her dissertation was presented at two international conferences. Her participation in these conferences was partially supported from R.G. Stone discretionary fund. She submitted two

papers for publication.

 She is the Director of Mathematics and Statistics in Safe Shipment International Inc.

O. Bayborodin defended his thesis "Estimation of diffusion and trend in noise via Mercer expansion" in August 2000. He constructs an effective numerical algorithm for Maximum Likelihood estimation of diffusion and trend coefficients in the presence of noise, and compares the theoretically found bounds of performance for his and routinely used  Mean Squared Distance algorithms by simulation. The contents of his dissertation was presented in three international conferences and is published in two papers, one more is near completion for submitting for publication.

O. Bayborodin works after his Ph.D. defense for AutoCode Inc.

 

·T. Korobeinikova defended her dissertation "Modeling and Parameter Estimation of Single Proteins Motion over the Membrane of Red Blood Cells" in August 2001. She was supported by NSF via CenSSIS grant for statistical fitting of Harvard medical school data on tracking labeled molecules over the membrane of red blood cells, variants of her model are promising also for applications in economics and finance,

·M. Lu defended his PhD "Statistical Estimation and Simulation Studies" in 2002, and moved to the PhD program, Iowa State University. He modeled mathematically the protection of liposomes by polyethilene-glycole coating (joint work with Prof. V.Torchilin, Chair, Pharmaceutical Sciences, NU) and multi-target tracking algorithms in noise and clutter both theoretically and numerically. His works were presented in  international conferences and published. His help in collecting statistical data for teaching statistics courses was supported by an internal Math. Dept. grant;

· I. Wickramasinghe defended her PhD thesis `Conditional Complexity of Compression for Authorship Attribution’ in August 2005.

·M. Gavasheli decided to quit his preparation for the Ph.D. defense after getting a permanent position at FleetBoston Bank. He had one publication before quitting the program.

·T. Turkdogan has got GAANN (US Dept. of Education) RA for completing his thesis on mathematical modeling of dopamine related methylation kinetics (joint work with Prof. R. Deth, Pharmaceutical Sciences, NU), he decided to quit his preparation for the Ph.D. defense after getting a permanent position at a public health company. His work is continued by PhD student Mustafa Kesir under my supervision.

 S. Nazarchuk decided to quit his preparation for the Ph.D. defense after getting a permanent position.

 

· supervised several  students, who graduated with Master degree:

· R. Protassov has got his NEU Master degree five years ago and defended his PH.D.dissertation at Harvard Statistics. We presented four joint conference talks, three of them at international conferences, published three joint papers and two conference abstracts after his graduation from Masters program and worked over Bayesian modeling of protein motion over cell membranes supported by the ERC CENSSIS 2001-2002 under my supervision.

·M. Abdelkader defended his PhD thesis in University of Alexandria, Egypt, presently he is a lecturer there,

·N. Kuz'kina works for an Insurance company.

· supervised several more Master program students:

S. Nazarchuk got his teaching release during Fall 2001 from the Sloan Foundation for his part in  the preparation of "Statistics for Bioinformatics" course. He has already got a  training over his RA for 2 quarters work at Iconics, Inc as a part of an industrial collaboration with CenSSIS.

V. Silantiev passed a similar training in November for his 2 quarter RA from Iconics, Inc.

A. Chetoukhina worked for the `State street’ corporation after graduating from her Masters program.

S. Fierimonte combined his study of Multiple Target Tracking algorithms with his work for Hanscom Air Force Base.
