Abstract:  On a normal surface singulariy, we consider a pencil of curves generated by two equations. We show how to study the equisingularity in this pencil. This leads to special singularities associated to the original surface singularity. In the case of a non-singular space these new singularities are the sandwich singularities of M. Spivakovsky. In the case of pencils generated by general equations we obtain an interpretation of exceptional tangents of a normal surface singularity.
