Abstract:  I will describe results concerning the rationality/non-rationality of the moduli spaces of polarized abelian surfaces, and the equations and syzygies of abelian varieties.

The proofs are based on a careful analysis of degenerations, ideas from polytope theory and combinatorics, and certain determinantal relations among theta functions.
