Abstract:  We define a gauge-theoretic invariant of a diffeomorphism of a 4-manifold, which can distinguish diffeomorphisms up to isotopy.  We use this to give examples of diffeomorphisms which are homotopic to the identity map of a 4-manifold, yet which are not isotopic to the identity.  A paper describing these results may be found here.
